This is how Dot Foods CEO Dick Tracy kicked off his annual Industry Update at this year’s Innovations trade show. And he’s not wrong—he presented 100 slides summarizing expert insights into multiple topics, including transportation, supply chain, foodservice, retail, and more.

For attendees—even those who don’t love numbers, graphs, and statistical trends—the Industry Update is one of the most valuable parts of Innovations, providing a comprehensive yet digestible overview of the state of the industry. After the show, attendees received the presentation, which they could use to educate their teams. Let’s summarize just some of the topics from this year’s Industry Update:

Trends in Society

Dick began his update with trends in society, which he claimed “set the table for all the other trends” impacting our industry. He explained how the rise of GLP-1 drugs, the K-shaped economy, and people migrating to the American South are forces that our industry needs to pay attention to.

Economy

“It’s tough to find relevant economic numbers that don’t change everyday,” Dick shared, and evidence of this economic turbulence is everywhere: historically high tariff rates, inflation, rising gas prices, and beyond. This has impacted consumer sentiment and buying behavior.

Food Industry

Even though FSMA 204 has been delayed, Dick warned that “2028 will be here before we know it, and some customers might want information before then.” Dick advised partners not to wait to look into their traceability processes. He also shared Dot’s progress to comply with FSMA 204, such as implementing handheld devices to scan cases for lot and shelf code information.

Supply Chain

“The consumer is back to pushing us for choice,” Dick announced, and that means our industry needs space to manufacture and stock products. Warehouse capacity has had its ups and downs, with vacancy rates growing for temperature-controlled warehouses and data center construction consuming resources. But with new leases, we’ll start to see more capacity for ambient products.

Technology

Remaining competitive for years to come will require our industry to think outside the box, often through digital solutions and AI. However, Dick cautioned that “we can’t have AI without IA.” Strong IA, or information architecture, is key to ensure digital solutions are working off of clean, structured data.

At Dot Foods, we stay informed of industry trends, not just to solve problems within our own business, but to help solve problems for our business partners. “We’re curious enough to care about the problems you’re facing,” explained Dick. “We’re willing to brainstorm with you on crazy solutions you might not have thought of.”

Dick will return to the Innovations stage in Houston on April 21-23, 2027. Until then, discover our solutions throughout our website
