In 2025, protein went from being a bodybuilder staple to a key part of consumer diets. This shift in perception came from the rise of GLP-1s and a growing understanding of protein’s role in overall health. Now, it’s across every grocery store aisle, every social media platform, and it’s not going anywhere in 2026. But how can foodservice operators capitalize on this key trend?
Meat-Packed Meals
The other factor driving consumers’ fixation on protein? A hunger for real, succulent meats. The bacon mania of the 2010s has expanded into an all-out meat mania, where consumers aren’t just adding bacon on everything, but pulled pork, sausage, chicken strips, and more.
And as more global flavors and dishes take hold, there are more exciting ways to bring meat to the table. According to Datassential, Korean bulgogi, Mexican birria, and Indian butter chicken are all set to grow on U.S. menus over the next four years. Bringing these international meat dishes and their accompanying sauces and spices to American menu staples is a surefire way to meet meat cravings while satisfying an appetite for excitement.
Due to its pricepoint, availability, and versatility, chicken is at the top of the pecking order among proteins. Restaurants can capitalize on chicken’s popularity and value by incorporating it across a variety of items, from healthy grilled chicken salads to spicy fried chicken sandwiches.
Proffee
Gone are chalky protein shakes. Protein coffee beverages (or “proffee”) are increasingly sought out just as much for their flavor as their health benefits (and caffeine, of course). With TikTok “proffee” posts generating more than 20 million hits, beverage chains have gotten in on the action with protein-powered lattes and cold foam.
When it comes to proffee, maximalism and protein maxxxing go hand in hand. Over-the-top beverage creations provide a sense of indulgence at a relatively affordable pricepoint. Incorporating popular and emerging ingredients like boba or tahini into proffee delivers both fun and functionality.
Protein Treats
Snacks are another area where protein has experienced a glow up, shifting from boring bars to tasty treats. U.S. demand for protein snacks is projected to soar from $1.8 billion to $2.8 billion by 2030. The rise can be attributed to not only health benefits but also convenience, flavor, and variety. Everything from waffles to brownies to chips are getting an added boost of protein without sacrificing flavor.
This trend doesn’t end at retail. Mini protein bombs, according to Tastewise’s 2026 Trend Forecast, have grown 110% year over year. These protein-packed sweet and/or savory bites make for a great grab-and-go snack or shareable. Small yogurt, cottage cheese, or granola snacks can also be a great addition to breakfast and cafe menus.
