Regular or decaf, iced or hot, sweetened or black—people are passionate about their coffee.
According to Datassential, 68 percent of consumers like or love it. It’s in ubiquity on menus and highly versatile; mostly because it is a base for so many interesting concoctions.
Cold Brew on the Rise
Does it seem like cold brew coffee is suddenly popping up everywhere? That’s because it is! Cold brew coffee is up 485.9 percent over a 4-year period per Datassential. Cold brew is different from iced coffee, in that it is brewed by steeping medium to coarse ground coffee in room temperature water for an extended period of time (12 hours or more). Then, grounds are filtered out for a clean cup. Cold brew coffee is never exposed to heat, using time to extract the coffee’s oils, sugar, and caffeine.
With the cool, smooth basis of cold brew, it’s a creative chef’s dream flavor scenario. Add in sweetened condensed milk or sweetened milk substitutes, like coconut or almond milk, for consumers with a sweeter palate. Or introduce aromatics—on the rise, but still in the introduction phase, are basil and lavender.
Salted Caramel Saturation
Salted caramel is up 63 percent over the past year per Technomic. Espresso drinks are the ticket when it comes to the sweet but salty taste: be it latte, macchiato, cappuccino, or mocha, salted caramel brings the sticky favorite to caffeine-lovers everywhere.
Other fast-growing flavors for coffee include coconut, honey, toffee, and marshmallow. Stock your syrups: almond coffees have grown 67 percent over a four-year period, with 32 percent of consumers finding it appealing.
Beyond the Coffee Cup
Coffee can be enjoyed way beyond the cup. Consider desserts, like an affogato. Affogatos are Italian coffee-based desserts with a scoop of gelato drowned in espresso. Tiramisu panna cotta or New Orleans style coffee and chicory beignets are great ideas for ways to enjoy your coffee—without drinking it.
